Blue skies and sunny beaches are on the minds , here are some tips for eating healthy while traveling. Are you trying to eat healthy, but find frequent air travel foils your good intentions?
In flight menus are changing, but many are still high in fat and sodium as well as calories. However, the airlines recognize their customers have special dietary needs. Most airlines will provide options such as vegetarian, kosher, lactose-free, and low fat, but you need to call ahead.
Most airlines require at least, a 24 hours notice some request 48 hours. If you travel a lot you might want to make it a standing request with your travel agent. Be careful though if you are traveling with a group, make sure the airline knows that only you are requesting a special entree. Once I was on a ski vacation with 11 other people. I requested a vegetarian meal and the entire group received a vegetarian meal. Needless to say, I took major abuse the rest of the trip.
Other tips for air travel include:
- drinking plenty of water. The high altitude and dry air tends to dehydrate the body which is believed to contribute to jet lag.
- limiting the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics and contribute to dehydration.
- packing a meal replacement bar and a piece of fruit in case the flight is delayed or you do not like the meal that is served.
